1. With the Word file open in Print Layout mode, go to the View menu, and choose Header & Footer.
2. You will notice a header box at the top of your page, with the cursor blinking inside it. You will also notice a series of Header and Footer buttons at the bottom of the page.
3. Assuming you want to put the page numbers at the top of the page (if you would rather put them at the bottom, click the mouse inside the footer box), align the cursor to where you want the numbers to appear, either left, center, or right, using the alignment buttons.
4. Then click once on the Insert Page Number button which looks like a little page with a number sign (pound sign, tic-tac-toe symbol). This symbol represents the number of the page.
5. If you want to show "Page 7 of 20"or something similar, click to the left of the # in the header and type the word "Page" with a space after it. Then click to the right of the # and type a space, the word "of" and another space. Finally, click on the Insert Number of Pages button (with the two plus signs on it). This button will automatically put in the total number of pages in your document.
6. Now go back up to the View menu, choose Headers and Footers again, to go back to your regular document.
Go to the Insert menu, choose Number of Pages. The following dialog box will appear, which allows you to choose the position and alignment of your page numbers.
